As far as I remember, my mind was my real prison, it caused severe physical and mental pains in my life. In my childhood, and now as I enter adulthood, I have always been in a struggle with my mind. This piece is dedicated to painful years of depression in my life. You know that your mind can function as a prison and also as a shelter. When you’re in chain, when you don’t take a step and when you insist on sitting in your comfortable couch of routine, you don’t see the ladder just sitting beside you, which is a path to the freedom. You might not find a lucrative couch outside there, but at least you know you’re not in chain anymore.

As I carved this sculpture with chisels, I tried to follow the movements of my inner expressions. I was initially inspired by “Sarv”, a holly tree in Iranian culture which eventually burst into a flame-shaped figure at the end of the process.

We have a saying in our culture that states “When god closes a door, he will open another door for you somewhere else”. This piece is somehow questioning the irony in this saying; cause as far as we know and have experienced, these days most of the doors are closed! And if you see an open one, you should expect a closed one right after that!

Owning jewelry for Iranian women brings credit. It’s a symbol of wealth, power and dignity. But in the current century, it appears more like a consumerism action. Therefore, I chose the material brass, which is used in jewelry design and put the piece beneath a part of a “want ad” in a newspaper; a section which is considered worthless most of the times in wealthy families but at the same time, it’s essential for middle-class families. The last page of this small notebook is devoted to a hand-written critical text which I wrote myself to confront the audience with the conflicts of values in modern society.
