Ignorant Bliss (2023)

Ignorant Bliss, Handwritten tiles, 2023, Photo: Carey Shaw

“Ignorant Bliss” is a series of factory-made tiles that are a writing surface for some personal quotes. For this project I needed clean factory-made tiles because I wanted them to be free of any personal touch, so they look like a part of a construction, or here a part of a building (wall). The contrast would lie in the handwritten text on the tiles.
Tiles have a specific function; they are a part of constructing and not normally a surface for manifesting a text. By doing so, whatever text that they carry would become a part of a bigger construction. Here of course, the tiles were added pieces and not the actual ones used in the building. There are three different quotes written on them, with coloured markers:

1) “Sleep-crying;
As in sleepwalking, the (un)fortunate simultaneity of human being’s two powerhouse gifts; sleeping and crying.”

2) Fake it till you can’t take it anymore.

3) But being told what to do is so amazing.
